Great Blue Herron

The Great Blue Herron is sometimes confused with a crane. Its long neck and huge wingspan give it a majestic profile in flight. It visits our pond periodically throughout the summer looking for frogs and little fish to munch on. It always travels alone and will stand motionless for hours in the shadows waiting to strike its prey. It won't let anyone get close. As soon as it sees one of us, it takes off. It looks like a flying dinosaur when it is silhouetted against the sun.
